Miami Gardens, FL Event Recap
Miami Gardens, FL – April 15, 2009Greater New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church
The Patchwork of Hope NetworkTM (P.H.N.) kicked off with its first event at the Greater New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Miami Gardens, Fla. Local pain specialist Dennis Patin, M.D., postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), or after-shingles pain, sufferer Kathy Sebby and representatives from the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and the National Pain Foundation (NPF) each gave presentations to help spread the word and educate the attendees about shingles and after-shingles pain. The educational seminar attracted approximately 50 church members and older Americans from a nearby senior center as well as reporters from the Miami Herald and Miami Times.
After the seminar, attendees spent time decorating quilt squares for the P.H.N. quilt, which will serve as a handmade testimonial to those who are affected by after-shingles pain and a reminder that they do not have to face after-shingles pain alone. The Material Girls, a local quilting group, were on site to provide assistance and support to those decorating the squares. Nearly every attendee was able to decorate a square, and many expressed that they enjoyed the activity. More than 40 quilt squares were completed, and the Material Girls will sew them together to complete the Miami P.H.N. quilt.

Local physician Dennis Patin, M.D., is the chief of anesthesiology and pain management at the University of Miami Medical Group.
